We’re thrilled to announce that, in support of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, we are starting a $10 million program, VR for Impact, dedicated to showing how VR can lead to positive impact and change. We know that VR provides a tremendous opportunity to develop and share ideas in impactful ways that can lead to change, and through VR for Impact, we will fund and support content and technologies that create the most powerful experiences to transform our world.


The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Virtual Reality’s ability to immerse people into an experience is unmatched, and VR can drive the world to act on global issues the human race is facing. Through VR for Impact, we are committing $10 million to industry partners and content developers to create experiences that improve awareness, education, and lead to action.


“HTC is a pioneer in recognizing the work the UN has done to promote social change through virtual reality,” said Gabo Arora, Creator of the UN’s VR Initiative and Creative Advisor to the World Food Programme. “The Vive’s room-scale VR capability can be a powerful tool for immersive storytelling, education and training; their support will empower more people to effect global change, give voices to the most vulnerable and provide access to new possibilities for the most marginalized.”


“There are millions of untold stories in every crisis, especially on the front lines where much of our work takes place,” said Corinne Woods, Director of Communications for the United Nations World Food Programme, which is utilizing the latest innovations in VR.  “HTC’s support of new ways to tell important stories, and help in shaping innovation for the UN’s sustainable development agenda, will build on the impact of our work and take it in new and exciting directions.”


“The potential for Virtual Reality to help us learn, understand, and transform the world is limitless. VR for Impact is a challenge to the VR community and content developers across the globe to help drive awareness and to solve the biggest challenges of mankind,” said Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO, HTC. “HTC Vive will fund the best ideas using Virtual Reality that truly drive awareness and positive change in our world. We encourage all players in the VR ecosystem to join as only together can we drive real impact.”


Starting today, VR for Impact will be calling for ideas at its website: https://www.vr4impact.com. The first winning projects will be announced on “Earth Day” April 22, 2017.


On Thursday, January 19th at the United Nations WFP Tent, Vive will be demonstrating special VR experiences that allow participants to step inside the shoes of others as they face some of humanity’s biggest challenges and inspire you to see how storytelling, education and creativity of mankind can be reimagined.

Thanks for the initiative, great to see companies taking climate issues seriously!

Do you accept requests for funding from university teams also or is the program strictly for business ideas? We are an interdisciplinary team of climate scientists, pedagogic experts and designers/programmers that is working on a project. Just to check if an application from us would even be considered.



@celfern - You don't have to be a developer to contribute an idea. If it's good enough, we hope we'll be able to help you find a developer (or match you with an existing one that perhaps has a similar idea).


@nik.name - We actually mean what we say when we say 'any platform'. We're hopeful that we will see finished projects on the Vive, but we won't dismiss ideas because they may have been initially developed on other platforms. Your example of 360 video being a good one. To have the most impact, we hope to see any of these ideas launch on a number of different platforms to get to as wide an audience as possible.

The United Nations invited the creator of a unique way for people to celebrate art & peace monuments and heroic world peacemakers with the latest AR and VR technology. On September 4, the United Nations invited peace walkway artist Paul-Felix Montez to speak at the U.N. in New York City for World Peace day.

What is the Peace Walkway?

The Peace Walkway project is a simple vision of locating one, mile-long peace art monument in 100 different locations (cities, towns, and parks, etc.) around the world. Each peace walkway Monument is one mile long made up of 250 different bronze plaques commemorating significant world heroic peacemakers - men and women whose courage and commitment to our greater humanity have changed our lives forever.

The free global walkway app will use augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) offering full bios for each peacemaker and the ability for anyone at one walkway location to connect and chat to another person at any of the installed monuments in the world. Thus everyone using the app gets to converse with anyone from anyone in the world.

How do the AR and VR apps work?

Using the free Augmented Reality App, simply point it at any given plaque, and two things happen. First, an Augmented reality image of the famous Peacemaker will appear, click on that image and a full biographical timeline of the entire life of that peacemaker is yours to explore. As you explore the story, a symbol [VR] or virtual reality will be seen along the way.

Click on that [VR] symbol, put on your virtual reality goggles such as Google cardboard and get the opportunity to view as if you were that famous peacemaker various moments and events through their eyes. From Martin Luther King ’s speech "I have a Dream" given in Washington D.C. to Mother Theresa’s daily caring for those in a leper colony, and all seen by you through their point of view.

I agree, We are a little bit lost. We don't know if it's possible to send you images, videos, or examples illustrating the concept we propose neither. We don't know whether few words are enough or whether you need a complete registration form (sum up, detailled concept, images, videos, important aspects etc.)  



With over 1.5 billion global citizens being disabled, ORU (Oral Roberts University) has made a commitment to help the individuals who cannot leave home do to their disability. We have done this already with telepresence robots, allowing students to teleport into our classes. Now we can enrich this with VR content in/through the new Global Learning Center with the HTC Vive --- allow global citizens to receive a Vive wherever they live and connect to ORU’s students and faculty. We will create ‘Vive in the Box’ and send the units to students who can travel via google earth and the new VR content. The coordinated effort with Robert J. Cipriano and The AllHumanity Group partnering with Oral Roberts University will align Virtual Reality content for humanitarian organizations involved in eradication of poverty, disaster relief, mission development and support, faith based and non-faith based educational content production and distribution and all non-profit humanitarian outreach. 

Hi, and thanks for the intitiave, this is great! Indeed it's quite hard to find funds to develop non-commercial projects. I have a question. When I submitted our project, I simply wrote a short descritption of our VR experience. Anyway we already made a complete document describing it, with scripts, moodboards and cost estimations. Is there a way to submit it too? If not, can I develop the project descritption I already sent? Thanks! Fred.

Hi, same question, it's not clear whether we should write down a few words and fill a "real" application form afterwards (with attachements and so on) or be very specific at this stage. Good day !




How do we submit our pitch deck? i couldnt add it when we signed up but our idea has a lot of context because our approach is from a film background.

Is it still possible to apply to vr for impact?


There was never a date that said when the submissions needed to be in by just that further questions would be asked at the begining of april. I am wondering if there is still a way to apply to this amazing initiative

Like @bcg124 and @evolvingtech, I have worked on a proposal. Today I found that the initial application period has finished unexpectedly (without any prior deadline announcement). Is it still possible to send proposals?



What is the status of this? I know that the application deadline has passed, do you have an expected time to notify finalist for followup information? Will people who you decide not to work with also be notified?

Unfortunately in my opinion the way viveport managed this initiative was so unprofessional!! Some people asked about the deadline and nobody answered them! Many other questions were asked and remained unanswered! The end of accepting proposals were announced out of the blue!!! The question is: "What is the reason that ViveForImpact manages $10m in this unprofessional way?"  Frankly, I am personally very thisappointed about a company that seems does not respect the valuable time of its 3rd party developers. So unfortunately despite the fact that I love Vive, from now I prefer to make apps for Oculus and PlayStation instead of Vive!!

It's really not as dramatic as you're making it out to be, nor is there some ulterior motive. As part of a team in the end stages of releasing a PSVR game, they're not even loaning dev kits to small studios right now, let alone helping fund them with initiatives such as this. The initiative was open for a long while, and there was an email notification well in advance of the deadline, but I don't know why that would be needed as the initial step in the submission process was short and easy.


I personally sent an email to the team with a question and received an answer within a day. Thank you Vive team for giving studios this opportunity (and all of the others I have seen from the past in my short time on this forum) in the first place, because other two VR players don't really care about indies at all.

I have not received any email from Vive, Viveport or ViveForImpact regarding the deadline.
Before the deadline, following community members asked questions about this initiative and never received the answer. I was waiting for viveport to answer them, then send my project which I worked on for 3 weeks.

Also after the deadline these members asked questions and not received any answer: 
Anybody who have experience working with AAA companies knows what is the meaning and consequences of such an unprofessional behavior. As a senior developer, I have experience in working with Microsoft, Oculus, Intel, Foundry and Adobe, and non of them are irresponsible. At least they answer developers and professionally document their initiatives. Please compare with HTC documentation at viveforimpact website!
Currently I am preparing my proposal to send it to Oculus and Sony and I am almost sure that at least they answer me!
