Re: flashing grey screen

Hello everyone. Is there any news about our problem?
I have 3 questions to HTC team.
1) Did you use the HDM with this problem with new cable? What was the result of this combination?
2) Did you send the new cables to your custumers, who has this problem? If you sent, how the result? If you didn't send, when are you going to send?
3) Now, after so many time, could you say, that your conclusion about bad cables is the right conclusion? Share us please, what test you did to be shure that the problem because of the bad cables.
Thank you for your answers.

Re: flashing grey screen

@echeva, thanks for report of test.

But, i think 50 minutes is not enought.

It would be interesting to know, if get temperature when appeare grey screen.

Equivalent temperature of HMD when you playing and when steamVR is off - like my HMD.

HTC staff, please, could you answer: What is reason of heating of HMD when it isn't working?

Re: flashing grey screen

You are right @Aidarpro. 50 mins used to be close to my limit, it is not enough.

I was experimenting with that, because I am "depressed" with this thing. Before, whenever I had some free time, I used the VIVE and I was so excited. Now, just thinking I may have the problem prevents me from using it. Just thinking a terrific inmersion may suddenly be broken, or a hard arcade progress may suddenly go into trash...

But, even if HTC is right, temp in the HMD should be anyway affected by temp outside. Obviously having 5C outside will cool the HMD dissipating internal heat, while having 40C outside will make it difficult. So even when room temp is not the cause of the problem, a cool environment may, in theory, increase gaming time.

While HTC gives an official answer, I would like to investigate workarounds. I was one of the first to give detailed data, and I called some of you from other places in order to join this forum. But I was not in the list of users HTC staff mentioned because I had no time to join all data about versions, tests and provide pictures. My HMD warranty ends at the end of this month and I don't have too much time to do extensive tests, so this is worrying me a lot.

Re: flashing grey screen

Hello everyone,

it looks like more people are joining in with the same issue.

Quick update: I will receive a new 3-in-1 cable probably this week and will be able to do more tests with it at the beginning of next week. This will allow us to check if the cable is at fault or if it is the HMD itself. I will keep you guys posted.

Re: flashing grey screen

I'm yet another having this problem.I live in NY and got my Vive at the start of Febuary from amazon as a b-day gift from the wife and it worked fine for the first few months.I starting having issues in May as the ambient tempature began to raise. At first I assumed it was my PC and spent weeks trying to troublesoot it and eventually doing a clean install of windows with only steamVR and nothing worked. Then I found this thread and thought about it the only thing that has changed in my space is the tempature.I have a small AC in my room now and it helps but sometimes its not enough.Just last night I was playing dead effect 2,cool game btw,and 2 hours it started grey screening on me.Set a box fan blowing directly on me on high and problem gone the rest of the session.I guess I could just deal with it as is but for an $800 device I shouldn't have to.

Re: flashing grey screen

I sent my headset off and it arrived at htc repair facilities today.  I enclosed a small note in oth english and romanian (where the headset was being repaired) saying that the issue only shows up after 30-40 mins of use so that the vive is not misdiagnosed as fixed.  Hopefully it comes back fully repaired / replaced asap.  will get back to this thread with the results of the warranty repair when i get the headset back

Re: flashing grey screen

Hi @Vildan

Thanks for your message.

1. Testing is still being conducted.  I've received one result so far, awaiting feedback from others. Too early to say one way or the other.

2.  Cables have been sent, I will also be following up by having one of more HMDs in for testing.

3. Too early to conclude anything at this point either way.  The test is to see if the flashing and heating occur with a differnt cable source.

Thank you,

John

Re: flashing grey screen

Hi @jagibson!

Echeva has written:

"After one month without getting the time to do any test, I have found 50 minutes free time and played with the vibe. This time I used air conditioner, my room was at 25C. I measured temp on the front exterior side of the headset with a laser termometer. The hotest areas were surrounding the camera. The closest ir sensors were the ones some people said that were the first to fail. Almost inmediately they reached 35.8C, but kept constant temperatureduring gameplay. I had no greys during those 50 minutes.

I went out steamVR and left the headset connected to the computer, but stand-by. I increased room temp to 28C and went out my home. Three hours later I returned. The headset was still at 35.8C. So, it was stand by, room temp was 3 degrees more, but headset temperature was almost constant."

Could you make simmilar test with HMD withou grey screen?

Re: flashing grey screen

Hi everybody

The last days I tested several times:

- my room temp is between 26 and 29° C these days

- the issue can be reproduced reliably after around 20-30min

- if you don't connect your controllers (just let them "off") then you can see the following:

-> the headset might still be tracking well - but the lighthouses start greying out in the SteamVR application.

-> sometimes you are able to continue playing whithout grey flashes for some time, even the lighthouses show grey in SteamVR overlay

-> regarding your headset position, the grey flashes start to appear

-> if you cover your headset from the sides with your hands like you want to take it off the head, sometimes, the grey sreen stays for a long time.

-> and it starts to be unplayable after a while - in my case it happens a lot, when I'm facing my monitor directly and turn my head a bit downwards.

Re: flashing grey screen

hi everyone,

i have the same problem everybody described in the comments. My experience is exactly as AGR-13 described above. I recently changed cable from the old to the new 3-in-1 but the problem persists. I usually play seated with controllers turned off, but it can also happen when playing room-scale with controllers. I use the sync cable.

I am worried because from staff's response they don't seem to have a clue and several months have passed already (no disrespect meant, i know it's like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack but this is a severe issue that needed to be solved already).

From everyone experience, it seems clear that the problem is HMD sensors overheating and giving false information to the software. Then again, if that's the case, why the problem was not present from the beginning? i played several months without the issue, while others are affected after a few weeks. It happens with several different iterations of the HMD, from the oldest to the newest. It seems to have started for everyone around the same time, a few months ago. This is good because it points to a problem in software. Maybe the made an update to improve the software tracking precision, and then the overheating problems became apparent.

In any case, i think it's a problem that the Vive team have to solve with the steamVR devs, maybe finding a way to check the reliability of the sensors and ignore information from sensors that don't pass the check.

here are my infos:

HMD Serial and date of purchase: FA63PJJ00304 - launch day

Grey Screen: does  it flicker or stay solid grey? starts flickering after 30-60 minutes, than flickers more and more, one of the basestations keeps greying out. Basically what everyone said.

Re: flashing grey screen

Same problem that most are having. I can play room-scale games for hours with no tracking loss. Every time I play Project Cars, I start to lose tracking after 30-40 minutes.

HMD Serial and date of purchase:  FA6BGJ001817 11/2016

Grey Screen: flickers after 30-40 minutes, eventually staying solid grey

When problem began (more or less):  When I started playing Project Cars about a month ago. Project Cars is the only seated game I play. I can play for hours at a time with room-scale games like The Golf Club VR and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter with no tracking loss.

Photo of the room your vive is in: Can provide by PM if necessary. Play area is 3.5m X 3.5m, open on two sides, and is air conditioned to 70F (21C). Dedicated VR PC is centered just outside the play area on one of the open sides. Keyboard and monitor face the play area. When playing Project Cars, a GT Omega Wheel Stand with a Logitech G27 and a chair is placed in front of the PC. Tracking is flawless with this setup for 30-40 minutes.
