Vive Pro audio quality

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

I just plugged the usb cable in a different port. (It was in a usb hub before). Made a huge difference in audio quality.  Feels like I'm 80% there now. Could still do with more bass detail, but at least it's tolerable now. If you guys have separate usb cards or are using hubs, give it a try.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

In that case you will not be able to use the Pro's headset buttons to regulate volume.

The correct device to use is the Multimedia one.

I have reseated USB to different ports including a high quality PCIe USB card and do not notice an improvement tbh.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

Quick update: We are still investing reports of poor audio quality and are thankful to everybody who was able to provide system logs. I will reach out to users who posted in this thread over the weekend on a 1:1 basis in case they would also like to submit System Reports for inspection - they are very helpful in determining software and hardware compatibilities that require further attention. The update published to the beta branch is still under evaluation and may not be representative of whichever update ultimately is pushed to the public branch. It is not an EQ based patch.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

I turned on the SteamVR beta and updated the HMD firmware and power-cycled everything.

It works good enough for me that now I would not return it. I play two music based games a lot - TheWaveVR and Audioshield. Prior to the fixes they were both basically ruined, especially Audioshield because that's MY music playing. TheWaveVR plays music I wouldn't ordinarily listen to so it hurts less to have it screwed up.

Anyway, I can't guarantee that the bass or volume are as good as the DAS, but for sure they are significantly better than before the fix.

Thanks, Vive crew.

p.s. I find the Vive Pro ear phone cushions pleasantly puffy and comfortable and if I play with them a little I think they get a direct shot into my ears. Lining them up just right definitely affects the sound. I don't think they need a curved arm. And... I like having a volume control on the HMD itself.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

did improves the bass level a little bit but still no where as good as OG DAS

(side effect:  volume output for pro headphones is drastically reduced)

Sorry for my BAD English

YES - What he said. This is a load of bull. Didn't you people have one single person test this thing before you sent it out? Not one person who had the Deluxe Audio Strap?

I gave it a nice 6db boost at 80Hz and it was sounding pretty good until I went to turn it up and found everything was already at 100%. Turning on the effects came at great cost on the volume.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

I have noticed that the volume reduced, after my test is about "9dB" the most balanced.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

Yup same here .Bass is serverly lacking. Did the firmware update that was released but did not fix the weak bass. I thought the vive pro had a built in amp correct? So how can the bass be so bad. My 10 dollar headphones sound better. If this does not get fixed in the next 7 days I will be returning my Vive PRO

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

I agree.  So many people will be approaching the deadline for returns soon.  Yet, still no solution.  HTC should consider that a partial refund for defective headphones would probably cost them less than having to process all the returned units.  Or at least promise a replacement for the headphones before it's too late.

For the few people that claimed decent audio, have you tried listening to rap or rock music with the Vive Pro?  Does it actually sound anywhere near the Deluxe Audio Strap?

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

Same problem here. Did firmware update and rebooted everything, but the volume at 100% sounds like my DAS at 50%. It's sad because I'm loving the display but no way I'm paying 800 bucks for a headset with speakers that sound so poor.

So, at this point I want to know if this is a driver issue or a hardware issue.

If it is a hardware issue I would like to start a RMA.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

I've noticed that enabling "gain reduction" in the SteamVR settings doesn't seem to do anything, which makes me think that it is locked on with the Vive Pro. With the Vive, gain reduction keeps the volume below a certain level to keep from blowing the speakers. Even with volume at 100% it has no effect on the Vive Pro headphones.

Re: Vive Pro audio quality

The Pro does have an integrated amp - the gain of that amp is controlled independently of SteamVR/Windows and is managed by the volume control interface on the left earpiece.  @MartinMarty @paulasheville @chenkb @Rob9674 can you please verify that the volume drop you reported is still present when both the HMD's amp is set to maximum output (as set by pressing the volume up button on the HMD) and the volume is maxed out at the global, device, and application layer of windows?

We're still evaluating the deployment of the update currently hosted in the beta channel. As stated previously, some of this will require some optimization/integration from the larger developer community. If you'd like to contribute a system report for evaluation, I'm happy to send you the instructions to do so.
