Headset Track Loss

This one has got me stumped.

Upon the launch of any VR title, the application will work as expected for 2-3 minutes before the headset will " white out " and go into track loss according to the Steam VR monitor.   My fix for this is to shut down Steam VR ( which will also shut down the running VR title ) then, simply relaunch the title.

After the second launch of the title in question, the system will perform flawlessly for as long as I wish to play it. ( have gone several hours without a single hiccup afterwards )

The issue only manifests itself during the initial launch and is reproducable every time the VR system is fired up for the first time, so this puzzles the hell out of me.

Now, this may just be a coincidence, but after reviewing the vrserver logs, the loss of track typically happens within 1-3 minutes after the system updates the lighthousedb.json file.  Eg:

Wed Jan 04 2017 18:34:50.934 - lighthouse: Saved LighthouseDB rev 869 to D:\Steam\config\lighthouse\lighthousedb.json
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:35:07.258 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: SendOnPoseChange took 0.805801ms
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:35:24.100 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: SendOnPoseChange took 0.552742ms
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:36:00.967 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: Resetting tracking: no optical samples for 2015ms
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:36:00.967 - lighthouse: Stopped tracking with universe 1480121868
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:36:06.067 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: No IMU data in past 5 seconds
Wed Jan 04 2017 18:36:06.067 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: No optical frames in past 5 seconds

At which point I have to shutdown SteamVR and reset the entire thing.  Afterwards, however, it runs just fine.

The only other oddities I've noted in the logs that I would potentially consider strange are:

Sat Jan 07 2017 14:15:14.873 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: Trying to start tracking from base 446B0378: Available samples not sufficient for booting (hits: 2+1)

and

Sat Jan 07 2017 15:23:40.738 - lighthouse: LHR-5F8DBC09 H: Dropped 2977 back-facing hits, 10 non-clustered hits during the previous tracking session

Re: Headset Track Loss

@nehumanus-crede @Rockjaw did you guys find a fix for this? I've just truned my Vive on again for the first time since being away over the holidays, updated both of my base station's & headset's firmwareand started seeing this issue too ("This headset is connected but not tracking" ~ 1-3 minutes after SteamVR boots up, with "Resetting tracking: no optical samples for 2022ms" in the vrserver logs).

I've tried the SteamVR beta, every combination of uninstall / reinstall of Steam, unplug / replug all cabling, machine reboots, disabled MS power management, removed all Steam USB Devices etc.  Still no luck.

Would be great to get this fixed, have a very expensive brick sitting on my desk for the moment Smiley Sad

Cheers,

D

Re: Headset Track Loss

As of this writing, the issue at hand is still present.

At first, I thought it might be a reflective surfaces issue within my office as there are quite a bit of them.  However, considering the problem resolves with a simple relaunch of SteamVR, I'm disinclined to consider that as a possible variable.

It also gives me pause to consider it may be a hardware issue for the same reasons.

As a workaround for you, when you see the track-loss kick in, try shutting down SteamVR and simply relaunching the title you're trying to play.  Mine only does it initially and the relaunch will allow me to play until I get tired and shut it off without further issue.

Next on the list is the reinstall of Steam itself.  Will let you know if anything comes of it.

Re: Headset Track Loss

New Vive owner here, exact same issue - loss of headset tracking randomly and frequiently.  Sometimes it will work flawlessly for several hours and other times will go to the white screen in the headset and indicate a loss of headset tracking on the VR window.  Have adjusted/moved the base stations, tried different USB ports (not sure if the USB even comes into play with this issue).

Please help track down this issue.

Re: Headset Track Loss

Ok, update.

Reinstalling Steam sounds so simple.  Until you have to take into account the move of nearly half a terabyte of game data Smiley Indifferent  THAT took a bit of time, but I got it done.

Pulled Steam off the system and reinstalled it.  No good.  The problem showed up less than a minute after launching a title and, like always, a reboot of SteamVR and relaunch of the title seems to fix it.

Next on the list, I will be purchasing either light stands or floor poles to mount the room sensors on.  The idea is a better angle / position that I can adjust vs the wall mounts.  This may take some time as I don't have a local camera store that will carry such things so, to my favorite online camera store I go ! ( B&H )

Will let you know if it resolves anything or not.

Re: Headset Track Loss

FYI - light stands are pretty cheap and easy to get on Amazon, if you haven't already headed to a camera store!

I'll chase this for you today.

Re: Headset Track Loss

Update.

I pulled one of the lighthouse sensors off of it's wall mount and stuck it on top of one of my camera tripods for testing purposes.  The tripod sits on the desk to my left and elevates the base station to approximately seven feet.  This effectively moved the base-stations closer to one another by about five feet.

Since this move,  I have not seen a white-out condition within the headset.

Tested it last night and this morning.  Will let you know if anything changes or if the system stays stable.

What is interesting to note is even in the original mounted positions, the base stations appeared to be operating normally.  Both Green sync lights were active and no obvious issues were seen.

Re: Headset Track Loss

I have had some success lately as well.  I did several things (see below) and am not sure if one of those things was the single thing that fixed the issue or if is a combination.

1.  I slightly tilted one of the base stations down.

2.  I reset my room scale play area.

3. I have found that the cords must be plugged into the computer BEFORE starting the comuter.  If I plug the system into the computer after startup it behaves very flaky.

So far everything is working flawlessly!

Re: Headset Track Loss

Update:

My previous post is no longer valid.  Same issues have surfaced again after relatively normal behavior for several days.

Have been saving the System Reports generated by SteamVR app and all end with something like a loss of back facing frames and also an IMU error message.

Very frustrating.

HTC please help track this down.

Re: Headset Track Loss

@nehumanus-crede, can I ask a quick question - you say the base stations got five foot closer together. How far apart were they initially? That sounds like a big jump.

Re: Headset Track Loss

Had to take a quick measurement before I could reply to your question Smiley Very Happy

Initially, the two units were fifteen feet apart situated in the corners of my office space.

During the testing with my tripod, they were roughly ten feet apart.

I have since remounted the left / rear sensor to another position on the wall and the units are now thirteen feet apart.

After the tripod test and subsequent base-station move,  I have not seen a white-out / loss of track condition since.

Re: Headset Track Loss

Ah, okay. The maximum recommended distance between base stations is 16ft / 5m, so you were pretty close to the limit there. That could be the issue right there!

Re: Headset Track Loss

My Vive has worked fine since January but now I get whiteouts. Usually less than a second, sometimes more, but enough to ruin the immersion and the game/experience, plus I frequently get shot or killed by the enemy while I am blind.

I only play Vive a few hours a week. I noticed this problem a couple weeks ago. In that time, Steam, Nvidia and Microsoft have installed updates for sure and I think I remember a Vive update too.

I've tried restarting VR, rebooting, turning off AV and other applications. No improvement.

I tried adjusting base station position and re-running room setup, but I never had a problem with it before.

I am on an i7-3770K @ 3.5GHz with 16GB RAM and Zotac 1080 Amp Extreme. I have all SSD. I know the CPU is dated but it was working fine until recently.

My base stations are about 14.8 feet apart. I never measured this before. It was never an issue before.

Could ambient light be hurting me now that it is summer? There is no direct sunlight in this room and I have good blinds, etc because it is my office, but cracks do let a photon beam through here and there. I am also under the impressino that reflections could be a problem, but nothing has changed in my space in that regard.

Any ideas for me, I sure would appreciate them.

Thanks,

-Marty
