HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

I recently received my HTC Vive right before new years and went to attempt to set it up.

Running the setup software on the website eventually has SteamVR run, at which point my computer completely freezes / locks up and a forceful restart as required.

I'm at work while writing this, but offhand my PC specs are:

Intel i7 6700k

32GB memory

GeForce 1080 GTX Ti

1000 Watt Corsair PSU

I've done various troubleshooting trying to get it to function, I noticed during the setup wizard where it tries to detect the USB / HDMI it tends to just spin despite following the steps and unplugging the small box the headset plugs into and replugging it back in and the various other steps listed in the setup wizard troubleshooting..

Looking online I found some other recommendations I've tried:

Wiping drivers through SteamVR and restart having them reload.

Run Steam as admin

Enable beta option for SteamVR

Reimaging my computer

Attempted to use other VR applications aside SteamVR, has same effect just computer locks up, no video through the headset or anything.

None of the above has resolved my issue, any support would be appreciated, I just want it to work.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

I'm having the exact same problem on a new computer I received last week. Similar system,  also have a Geforce 1080 Ti. I've spent the last week trying to fix it.

So far I've uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers, formatted my entire computer and restarted from scratch, attempted to install drivers through USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, updated geforce drivers, downgraded geforce drivers, installed on a different hard drive, etc.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

This might be an issue with the 1080Ti. Out of curiosity why exact card are you using @Tenebrion @PhoenixKatera? How old are the drivers you're downgrading to? There was a long stretch just after the launch of the TI edition where users reported bugs limited to that card and users report it being fixed just recently. You may need to try launch drivers.

Also, how are you plugging in the Linkbox/HMD? Are you going straight into the GPU? Using adapters? HDMI or CiniPort? Multiple adapters?

@VibrantNebula

Thanks for your response, I am using this card.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127940

Guess it's not the Ti model.

As far as HMD hookups, I am running HDMI from the lil box stright to my video card currently.  I'll ultimately be using mini-display port to display port once I get the cable in the mail for it.

Use old drivers?  How far back should I be going?  I assume these are available on nVidia's website?  Can't say I've downloaded old drivers anytime recently.

@PhoenixKatera

You can find them here: https://www.geforce.com/drivers

There's a series of drop-down menus which allow you to specify your exact model of GPU and then select a specific driver version.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

@PhoenixKatera,

I think most people were using drivers released around launch. If you Google "1080 stuttering Vive" you'll see lots of chatter around this. The issue is, there was a major security fix implemented in more recent versions of their driver set so using older ones makes you vulnerable to potential exploits so it's a bit difficult to recommend a specific driver package. I'll do a bit of research on 1080 releated issues.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

Well, I tried the ones listed in nVidia's search tool, none of those worked.  I ended up finding an older one through google getting routed to nVidia's webpage, as far back as 368.25, which seems to have remedied my freezing problem.

I seem to be running into other issues now, but hey not completely locking up and having to restart seems like maybe a step in the right direction.  I'll post the new issues here, since it still falls within the scope of getting my Vive to work to begin with.

I receive this pop-up error from SteamVR after I attempt to launch it.

and on SteamVR status menu it shows

I attempt clicking launch compositor, but nothing happens. ( That I can see. )

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

After removing a HDMI to Display port adapter and plugging the cable in and selecting option to restart my Vive, it appears to be working now.  I still get this under settings though, not sure what a compositor even is but maybe it seems related to the issue I was having a moment ago?

Opting into SteamVR beta seems to have fixed the frame issues..

Not sure what the red Application text means!

Lastly I get this pop up stating I should Enable Direct Mode, but when I click the button, it still seems stuck in Extended mode and I get the same pop up.

I'd love to troubleshoot more but it's time to go to work, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

@VibrantNebula,
Apparently opting into SteamVR beta didnt fix the missed frames, before I got to leave it started doing it again. :C So yeah only those two issues now.. it's an improvement at least!

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

Hi @PhoenixKatera,

Please follow these instructions and let us know how it goes Smiley Very Happy

1. Check if you have BOTH of your HDMI connected to your 1080 Display card(HMD and monitor).

2. Check if your display card driver is up to date

3. Go to SteamVR settings > Developer > Remove all SteamVR USB Devices

4. Unplug all VIVE wires > Reboot> Temporary disable your Anti-virus software > Plug all VIVE wires back on(the system will automaticallly re-install all the drivers)

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

Ok, after doing some research I found certain -too old- drivers don't support Direct Mode, I cannot update to current drivers or else the system will just return to crashing on SteamVR launch like the start of this thread describes, however, I did look for a newer driver which seems to work just fine in Direct Mode which has resolved the remaining problems I had.

For any of those with a similar issue as me, 375.95-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql works just fine on my rig.

Re: HTC Vive Setup Causes Computer to Freeze @ SteamVR Launch

I have similar problem.

My Rigs:

- AMD - Ryzen 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor
- Asus - PRIME B350-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard
- G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
- Western Digital - Black 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
- Asus - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Dual Video Card

After playing a VR game, sometimes after few minutes and sometimes an hour, my HMD and whole PC freezes, and I am forced to restart my PC. This issue is happening often lately.

I contacted Vive Support through Chat, they connected to my PC and did several things, didn't help.

My USB cable was connected to USB 2.0 , then did "Remove all USB devices" from SteamVR, then connected the cable through USB 3.0.. The HMD is connected to my GPU directly through HDMI, I updated everything to last drivers, the MoBo Bios and all devices in my PC.

Any idea what else I can do to solve the problem?
