Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

I just bought an HTC Pro set with the 2.0 controllers and base stations.  The screen will turn all grey after about 5 min of play and will only come back if I reboot SteamVR or the breakout box.  The controllers and base stations remain green but the headset goes to flashing green and says "connected but tracking lost".  Searching around the forums it seems like a few people have had this issue.  I have tried reinstalling SteamVR, disconnecting all other USB devices, disconnecting all secondary monitors, removing and reinstalling the headset USB devices, updating drivers, and even covering my windows.  All the same result, the headset will work perfectly for ~5min and then lose tracking.

I have a Win10 PC (fresh install), AMD2600X, Geforce1080, 16GB RAM,  and a ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F motherboard.  Any help witht this would be great. The issue has been frustrating to say the least.

Yes correct.  The tracking/image will not come come back unless I reboot the headset or SteamVR.

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

Update to my issue with all that I have done to try and resolve the issue.  The issue still persists.  When I first start up, I can play for about 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards the issue starts occuring more frequently.  I even set had the headset down on the ground and had it sit in SteamVR home with nothing else running and the issue occured.  The weird thing is that the controllers still connect and are tracked when the screen is grey.  I can move them around and still see them on the viewport on my monitor.

* Unplugged all other USB devices

* Swapped from a USB3.0 to a USB2.0 port

*Covered all glass in the play area with blankets.

*Tweaked the lighthouse base stations and re-ran room setup.

*Tried a single base station at a time.  Tried both as a single base station.

*Changed my resolution down to as low as settings would allow.

*Tried a different area of my home.

*Reinstalled SteamVR

*Uninstalled and reinstalled and HTC Vive USB devices

*Checked my BIOs USB settings, everything looked good.

*Made sure power and my GPU were in high performance mode.

I am at a loss of what to try next. I was thinking about taking the headset to a friends house who also has a VR Ready PC.  But unfortunately he is out of town for work for a week or two.  If the same issue occurs on his setup, I would think the physical headset hardware is faulty.

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

Check this thread, not same headset but it migth be a sensor... I will try this...

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/70l52q/grey_screen_issue_not_related_to_tracking/

Maybe also check for interference, bluetooth is running in the 2.4 GHz like most of the Wifi.....

I tried coverering each sensor but I may have missed one. I did not try disconnecting the Wifi.  I will try that but that would be very inconvientent if it ends up being the issue.

On another note, I noticed that every time the headset screen goes grey and is flashing green in SteamVR one of the lighthouse's goes grey in SteamVR. I believe that it is the same lighthouse every time.  It will go back to green after a min or two but the headset never comes back until a headset reboot.

I had no luck with sensors, not with any other “solution” and the problem came so suddenly which makes absolutely no sense since there has been 0 change in the environment I’m on.

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

I was finally able to play for 1 straigth hour... I thougth I fixed it! but then it crash again...

what  I did was re-install the ViveProHmdSetup.exe as admin (rigth-click run as adminstrator)..

I did not even remove the already installed.. Launch steam as admin too...

But now back to square 1, I read that setting the camera to a lower frequency migth help, or even disable it... When I tried to lower the frequency, the application prompt it needs to restart and the settings comesback to original 60GHz   :-/

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

Oh man, an hour is much longer than anything I have gotten.  I did get to play for 15 to 20 min the other night and was excited but the issue happend again.  I am still very frustrated by this.

I also disabled the camera function but nothing new.  I may try to install the app as admin too.  By any chance, anyone here who has this issue have an ASUS motherboard?  I am reading similar issues with people who have these boards and the USB drivers that come with them.

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

I have an ASUS motherboard as well... here's my rig :

Motherboard : ASUS P8Z68-V GEN3

CPU : Intel i7 2600K @ 3.4 GHz

RAM : 24 GB

GPU : EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 FTW

Nvidia driver : 397.64

OS : Windows 10 Pro x64

USB3 drivers ASMedia :  10.0.16299.431 / Microsoft Windows / 2018-05-02

Base Station : version with 9LEDs

Distance between base is 4.87m and fully centered

I did not use the ASUS ASMedia USB3 driver since it was 2016..  :-/

My base station and remote stay connected and green when the HDM lost connection... Even waiting, the headset never come back... When it work, there is no lag at all anbd no flicker.....

I did try to cover EVERYTHING in the room, windows are covered, i'm in the basement... I tried all usb possible.. delete all VIVE device and reinstall...

Is there any support tech who is reading this that can help?

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

Sounds exactly like what is going on with mine.  I was hoping someone from tech support would be on this forum to help but I haven't seen it in this thread yet.  I also opened a ticket up with support directly on Tuesday but I have not heard anything back.

Re: Grey Screen after 5 min of play, headset loses tracking

I have update for you... I was able to make it work with support today...

First step (after all the one we already all did like you) was to completely unplug my 2nd screen from my display card. That makes it work more than usual, like 30 mins...

But then, we found out that my rig works like a charm when by mistake the camera did not get detected. So playing without the camera makes it work for me...

You can try to disable the camera in the setting...

But what we did after we notice that was to plug the link box into an USB2.0 port behind the computer. Camera got detected and the message "device could go faster is plug into an USB3 port" is shown in the device pannel.

Now, everything works at least but the problem is not solve since I need to makes it work in the USB3.0 port.

HTC support now ask me to contact Steam support since we did identify the problem that is coming probably from the camera's driver, they might provide me another one since the "default camera driver" is not working for me. Steam are the one responsible to provide drivers for SteamVR...

At last, I can play with my headset now... My 2 daughter did play more than an hour each one back to back... (that was a good test) Smiley Wink Now it's my turn and the controller battery are dead! lol

I hope this could help you out...

If not, open a direct chat with HTC support, the service was impressive, no stress and the goal was to make it work!

I'll let you know when I'll get an update from Steam...

NOTE : do not forget to mention HTC support all the step you already did, that will speed up the process, they trust you and do not make it for nothing. One thing you might try is also downgrading you video driver but I did not need that step..

Good luck!
