Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

I read a lot of positive feedback on the new Audio Headstrap, and ordered one myself.

Then I finde these 2 videos showing problems with the "hinges" on the headstrap??

And these are 2 of the more wellknown youtubers out there:

From Tested - go to 3.20 min.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGTnFohXGWg

And from Bumble - go to 4.30

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhuLV68ViGE

That is suddenly a rather big percentage of the youtubers out there testing it.

Is there a real problem here?

I broke my Vive while installing the new Deluxe Audio Strap, don't make the same mistake! Click "Show More" for an update! Timestamp to go straight to the part about breaking my Vive: 4:31 UPDATE HTC sent me a new Vive. The Vive in this video broke because the screw came out in the side port, and
Jeremy reviews HTC's new Deluxe Audio Strap for the Vive virtual reality headset. We think it's an essential upgrade for HTC Vive users, improving the fit and comfort of the headset and adding good built-in audio. This is what we wish the Vive shipped with last year! Shot and edited by Gunther ...

This is something I would have liked but like many companies they rob blind their UK customers (and make up some bs about exchange rates) so in the UK this retails at $127 +  $25 shipping!

I am sorry Emexrulsier.. But I post about a problem with the audio strap quality, and you whine about prices.. Make your own topic please. I hate the price too, but its another topic!

I do know that Bumble actually did not follow the instructions and because of that he broke it.
That is not the fault of the Strap only the person who does not follow instrcutions.

Yea, looks like Bumble broke it himself - and HTC was kind enough to send him a brand new Vive to repleace the broken. I hope I get the same service if mine breaks lol.

Another thing tho - Just got mine today. Impressive speed, I ordered Yesterday, and it was sent to Denmark in 1 day. Im at work now, so will open it later, and hope it fits perfect =)

Ok, forget the "hinges" - What the hell is this??

Looks like the padding cant handle a little sweat?? This looks really bad!

Re: Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

Regarding the foam padding, if this is the same open cell poly foam that comes with the HMD, I doubt that sweat alone has any effect on degrading or scaling of the foam itself. I would think that it would take a combination of things.

The guy making the complaint specifically mentions that there was no hair product involved. Maybe not that time but how many times before the video was made. He made it sound like it was used for three hours and then the scaling starting. Something doesn't sound right with that. I am familiar with this type of foam if it's the same as the face cushion foam. It takes a ton of abuse and there are very few things that will degrade it. Some oils can have an effect over time, but we're talking weeks, maybe even months, not hours. Not to mention what those type of oils and solvents would do to your hair and skin.

I would like for the moderators to chime in on whether this is the same foam as the face cushion. BTW, my deluxe strap is due in this Friday, after that I will give you a personal experience report.

That is strange to me, too. Even though they probably rushed this to market without a lot of formal testing, I would have thunk ;-) that just playing around with the prototypes in the lab would have revealed this alleged problem if it only takes minutes or a couple hours to occur. I wonder if at the last second somebody decided the production units would get a different type of foam, for whatever reason, than the prototypes.

I lucked out on this one. I was scared off by the broken head hinge and decided not to order for a while. I will also be doing that when the wireless HMD comes out.

I am sure HTC will take care of all the people who already bought one.

Re: Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

Back on topic of the hinges.

I got my DAHS yesterday - thx for fast delivery!

Easy to replace with the old one and it feels great.

Then my girlfriend tries, and I haven't told her about any potentiel problems.

And first time she has to remove the headset, she get a hold of the side "arm" and it came off instantly.

This is really bad design! - It should have a firm locking mechanism! Like the old headstrap had.

Re: Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

I ordered mine June 5th at roughly midnight eastern time (I'm mountain time so 2 hours behind), I did get a email from HTC for the order but when I click the order number, it goes to the website and shows the Vive itself (ordered in April) but doesn't show the Audio head strap or the face pads and nose guards I also ordered. When I ordered through the Vive Canada website, it showed all items being "in stock" but I've not gotten a follow up email as to how my order is coming along (processing or shipping) so I'm sitting here with a question mark over my head. Smiley Sad

So I just finished a 30 minute session of Space Pirate Trainer... and the foam padding is rolling and flakeing off like dead skin on a sun burn. O_O20170608_125321.jpg

It's worst when it was damp. I let it dry and it did it less.... still did it but less.

Re: Is there a problem with the new Deluxe Audio Headstrap hinges?

Hi CaTaPulT,

It's Kranky Pantz from the ISRTV forums.

Funny finding you here, small world eh?

Did you ever receive your Deluxe Audio Strap?

I ordered mine from Amazon.ca on Tues June 6th and received it on Saturday June 10th.

So far so good, and it's definately an upgrade from the original strap, but all of these reports of hinges, and especially disintigrating foam defects have me concerned.

Funny thing is, when I place the Vive and the Rift side by side, the Vive looks like a Tank in comparison.

The Vive pretty much weighs twice as much as the Rift now, which will most likely make the Rift my go to HMD for extended sim racing sessions.

I still plan on keeping both, as they have their exclusive games and offer a nice contrast to each other experience wise.

I'm even keeping my Oculus DK2, as I just can't give it up for it's ability to play some older titles which don't work on these newer HMD's (Alien Isolation, GRID:Autosport, etc.).

Hope all is well on your end, and it's nice to see a fellow Canuck such as yourself here on these forums as well.

Cheers, KP
