Maximum Lighthouse cover area

Hello:

So i got a pair of HTC vive lighthouse sensor, i wonder what is the maximum area it could cover without losing much accuracy?

Thank you.

Re: Maximum Lighthouse cover area

@libra34567,

The limiting factor in current gen lighthouses is the IR sync flash and not the laser sweeps. The sweeps can go pretty far depending on environmental factors but the IR flashes are limited to ~20 feet. When aiming for larger areas, always use the sync cable, mount a bit higher off the ground and pointed more downward, and use this FOV tool to maximize your laser sweep coverage and ensure you don't have dead spots. I've seen areas as large as 20 meters tracked with the current lighthouse tech. This video where Alan Yates explains lighthouse tech is also very helpful in understanding things like coverage.

Re: Maximum Lighthouse cover area

Thank you for your information, I went through the article, and it does give me some insights of how it works, though few question raised. (I didn't got a chance to try FOV tool yet)
1. by 20 meters tracked do you mean 20 * 20 or 20m2?
2. Does that mean I can use a custom super long sync cable or even wireless sync plugs?
3. You mentioned the sweep can go pretty far depending on environmental factor, I have a 200m2 warehouse, what should I take in consideration when decorating? Does low light level provide a better environment? What else should I keep in mind?
4. Assuming syncing is not a problem, and it's the best environment for sweeps. what is the maximum area I can cover? I want to use it in a 200m2 area

Re: Maximum Lighthouse cover area

@libra34567,

1) Sorry for forgetting the units. I meant 20 square meters. Yesterday Joe from Valve released a bit of information about lighthouse 2.0 and said that they're initially only targeting support for 4 lighthouses with a coverage of 10x10 meters for launch.

2) You can probably just couple two sync cables together if you have them handy. I can't speak to wireless solutions. I do know that the S:N ratio of the signal can be a little lower than audio applications since the sync pulse doesn't need to be high fidelity.

3) It's mostly reflections and occlusion that are your enemies. IR interference in the 850nm range can also count against the S:N ratio of the laser system. Polished floors are a huge environment factor.

4) You'll need to experiment to figure out what works in your environment. Technically anything beyond a 3 meter diagonal setup is beyond our specs and thus is "unsupported" officially.

Re: Maximum Lighthouse cover area

With the current base stations technically 16.4 feet between the base stations - but some have been able to accomplish 25-30 feet with the sync cable (which is 60ft)

Also, one other thing to keep in mind is that the range of sync can be different depending on the room. For example, a room with white walls and low ceilings will bounce the sync around. That room will have greater sync range than a wide-open room with high ceilings or a room with dark or rough walls.

Re: Maximum Lighthouse cover area

Good afternoon, dear developers. I'm an engineer, and I do not have a question, I have an offer to improve your device. The fact is that because of the small volumes of such goods (VR). You have not yet encountered the main problem, which in the future will have a negative impact on the entire industry (VR). BUT, I have a technical solution to this problem and maybe, with the potential of you, you could become a monopolist of this industry. I do not demand much money, I will give the idea and the drawing myself for real money and 1 of your devices (VR).
Those. after registration is not her potential, your HTC Vive will not be competitors in this direction.
I assure you, that this is in your best interest.
